Kuali Student will be available as Open Source and has no associated licensing fees. The cost to implement will be institution specific depending on which components you adopt and your existing infrastructure. The Founding institutions will be implementing the modules as they are developed and will be sharing their experience with others.
Like any implementation of this size and with such a radical new vision for student service delivery, the costs will be substantial and felt through the institution. For example, one of the founder institutions is budgeting at least $1M per year for four years to implement Kuali Student.

There are several elements of the Kuali Student design that provide it with capabilites beyond what is available in current generations systems, including:

i) Configurability Kuali Student has a modular design delivered through service oriented architecture and web services. This will make it a very flexible system that can be configured to meet the needs of a variety of institutions as well as addressing the unique requirements of individual departments and units within a single institution.

ii) Concierge Concierge functionality is integrated with the Kuali Student modules to support the user and enhance their overall user experience. Concierge runs in the background gathering and reporting information from the other modules to allow Kuali Student to anticipate the needs of users and help them make decisions. It also supports academic advisors to provide more accurate, consistent and cross functional advice to students.

iii) High Level Abstract Entities such as learning units, person identity and time will allow Kuali Student to achieve its vision of person-centric, supporting a wide-range of learners, learning activities and business processes now and in the future.

Kuali Student is a modular, open-source, standards-based architecture. This combined with our service contracts will allow institutions to adopt the modules you require and integrate with existing systems.

Becoming a Contributor gives you a direct voice in the design and development of the system. It provides an opportunity to influence the future of student systems in ways that reflect your institution's vision and values. It also contributes to the success of the project for the benefit of the broader higher education community.

The current phase of the development project includes the Service Modeling and Contract Design for Release 1. We anticipate testing in 2009. We will keep our website current with participation opportunities.

Kuali Student will be a student-centric system, which means that the new system will have a greater focus on meeting student needs, especially when needs cross functional areas. For example, the system will guide a student into selecting the correct courses for degree completion, ensure that they are aware of and receive all possible bursary and scholarship funding, and make sure that they maintain eligibility to receive their awards and loans. The enhanced functionality will complement human interactions, releasing staff from repetitive clerical and administrative tasks, allowing them to provide higher value support and services to students, faculty, and others.

The Kuali Foundation has many partners participating in Kuali Days. We have not certified any KS specific commercial affiliates yet, but expect the same commercial affiliates who are involved in other Kuali projects to be involved in KS as well.

Yes. Kuali RICE is the middle ware of choice for all Kuali sponsored projects. Where individual components differ, we are working with the RICE team to develop a common architectural approach for the critical components that considers our overall requirements. This roadmap will guide our future middle ware decisions.

The various Kuali Foundation development projects are working together to leverage resources to address common problems and opportunities like workflow.

We expect implementation to begin at the Founder Institutions in 2009.

Kuali Student's use of rules and new concepts of "learning unit" and "concierge" are designed to address issues like support for graduate students.

Each of our participating institutions is seeking input from a variety of departments and teams within their own campus. In addition, feedback sessions from Contributors will test the designs and gather fresh input. Contributor groups will include established special interest groups like NITLE, as well as institutions in other countries.
